Memories of Internment
Grace Amemiya was a nursing student at the University of California, San Francisco, in 1941 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Her education was interrupted when she and her family were detained in internment camps. She will talk about her personal experiences as a former internee. Environmental Pollution, Climate Change and Our Health
Sandra Steingraber is a biologist as well as a cancer survivor. Her latest book is "Raising Elijah: Protecting Children in an Age of Environmental Crisis," in which she speaks as both a scientist and a mother about the joys of bringing up her son while searching for ways to shield him - and all children - in a world facing climate change and increased environmental pollution. Film: Miss Representation
The 2011 Sundance documentary "Miss Representation" exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. It features stories from teenage girls and interviews with such prominent women as Condoleezza Rice, Katie Couric, Margaret Cho and Gloria Steinem. A discussion will follow the 80-min film.

The Impact of Retrotransposons on Human Genome Evolution
Mark Batzer is the System Boyd Professor and Dr. Mary Lou Applewhite Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University. His research focuses on understanding the genetic diversity of humans, in particular the study of mobile DNA elements. He was recently part of an international consortium of scientists who decoded the orangutan genome. Sigma Xi Lecture.

Inaki Alday is the Elwood R. Quesada Professor of Architecture and chair of the architecture department at the University of Virginia. With Margarita Jover he also is a founder and principal of aldayjover architecture and landscape in Barcelona, Spain. In his lecture, Alday will share several of the firm's projects dealing with landscape and territory, urban public space and public buildings.

Planetarium Show
Are you curious about space? Do you wonder about what you can see in the night sky? If so, bring your questions and come to the ISU Planetarium to learn more. The first show will start at 7:00 pm and is geared toward a younger audience, followed at 7:30 by a show for a general audience. Weather-permitting, a star-gazing session will be held after dark. Free tickets for the shows will be available at the door starting at 6:45 pm.
