Reception and talk: "Earth as Art"
A fusion of art and science, the exhibition features stunningly beautiful images of the planet that also provide a platform to teach about satellite imagery and geography. Exhibit curator Brent Yantis will host a gallery talk at 6:30 p.m. The exhibition runs Feb. 2-26 at the Design on Main Gallery.
Lecture: Artist-in-Residence Jonathan Castro
"Branding Your Creativity: The Business of Art, Networking, Social Media and Development." Ceramics designer and ISU alumnus Jonathan Castro will visit Iowa State Jan. 30 -Â Feb. 4 as an artist-in-residence for the College of Design and Memorial Union. In this lecture, he will share his journey from student to full-time professional artist and the lessons he's learned on the way.

CANCELED: The Smart Mandate: Ubiquitous Computing, Environment and 'Resilient Hope'
This lecture has been canceled due to a family health emergency. We hope to reschedule at a later date. Interactive design historian and theorist Orit Halpern will discuss the relationship between "resilient hope"-- a managerial compulsion to anticipate and speculate upon disaster -- and "smart" infrastructure.

Research Social on Coding in Design
The College of Design invites researchers from all disciplines who are interested in design computation, design coding and design parametrics to a conversation to find common ground among disciplines, generate research questions, explore methodologies and discuss possible future collaborations. Light refreshments will be provided. Childcare and a child-friendly movie will be available.

Lecture: Hybrid Careers in Design: Industrial Design + Design Anthropology
Industrial designer and applied anthropologist Siobhan Gregory, a senior lecturer in design and design research at Wayne State University in Detroit, will speak about the changing roles, responsibilities and expectations of industrial designers working in the private and social sectors and the increasingly important role of anthropological methods in creating designs that are culturally appropriate, inclusive and relevant.

Travis Franck, program director for the nonprofit Climate Interactive and an expert on international climate and energy issues, will share his organization's free climate change decision-support tools and talk about policy struggles and successes.
