Mandalas are symbolic in Hinduism and Buddhism, and are created with geometric shapes incorporating ancient spiritual symbols. The Memorial Union will be hosting Tibetan Monks September 22-25, and they will create a large scale sand mandala on the 2nd floor. Zendoodle instructor Sara Merritt will lead this mandala drawing session on Tuesday evening.

Monks from the the Drepung Loseling Monastery will create a mandala sand painting in the lobby of the Memorial Union Monday, September 22 through Thursday, September 25. The process consists of opening ceremony with chants, music and mantra recitation and ends with the dismantling of the mandala and dispersal of the sand. As a scion of an illustrious musical family, 31-year-old Cuban pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa is one of the brightest lights on Havana's thriving jazz scene. He gained international attention when he won top honors at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in 2005 and his albums and work since reveal a composer who has fully integrated his classical training and love of the jazz continuum with his Cuban roots.
