Seminar: Cloud computing
12 Nov 2009, 4:10 PM @ 207 Marston - "A View of Cloud Computing and its Service," Mark Baker, University of Reading, England. He is a research professor of computer science in Reading's School of Systems Engineering. He is currently involved in research projects related to the Grid, message-oriented middleware, the Semantic Web, Web Portals, resource monitoring and performance evaluation and modeling. Cost: free.
Lecture: "My Hollywood Career"
12 Nov 2009, 7:00 PM @ Great Hall, Memorial Union - Corey Moss co-directed, wrote and produced a 78-minute feature documentary Dear Jack about the Jack's Mannequin/Something Corporate singer Andrew McMahon and his bout with leukemia at the age of 22. An ISU alum, Moss is an executive producer at Yahoo! Originals, where he created "Primetime in No Time," the highest-rated show on the Web. He has also written and directed short films. A screening of his film will follow the lecture. Cost: free.

It is, quite simply, one of the most acclaimed and enduring performances in the history of theater. Nearly 50 years ago, a young actor took the stage in a tiny off-Broadway theatre and introduced the world to a man they'd never forget. The actor was Hal Holbrook. The man was Mark Twain. Lecture: Mississippi River water quality
12 Nov 2009, 8:00 PM @ Sun Room, Memorial Union - "Mississippi River Water Quality: Policy, Farm Landscapes and Hypoxia," Eugene Turner, Louisiana State University. A hybrid oceanographer and wetland ecologist, he is active in the scientific aspects of coastal environmental management. In particular, his work addresses hypoxic zones, or Dead Zones, in which water oxygen levels are reduced to a level that can no longer support living aquatic organisms. Reception at 7 p.m. in the South... Cost: free.
Lecture: Phase space and new materials
12 Nov 2009, 8:00 PM @ Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium, Howe Hall - "Cooking, Fishing and Jogging through Phase Space: A Practical Guide to Discovering and Understanding New Materials," Paul Canfield, ISU physics. He will outline the basic philosophy and techniques needed to search for novel materials, including a combination of intuition, experience, compulsive optimism and a desire to share discovery. A general lecture that will include mildly slanderous asides and references to philosophers living and dead. Cost: free.
