Registration opens (juniors)
First day of assigned Summer 2011 and Fall 2011 registration dates for students projected as juniors. Hours for AccessPlus registration are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday-Saturday, and most Sundays.
Lecture: Reiman Entrepreneurial Series
Guest speaker is ISU alum Becky Taylor, senior adviser of innovation and entrepreneursip in the U.S. Department of State's office of science and technology. Registration is free but required; seating is limited.
Tuesday Tea
Come to the Farm House Museum to enjoy tea and conversation about all things Farm House. Mark your calendar from 12:00 pm-1:00 pm Tuesdays this month and enjoy the 150 year old structure in a whole new way. Check the University Museums website to learn what the discussion topic will be. Can't make it at noon? The Farm House will be serving tea from 12 to 4 pm on Tuesdays so stop in any time.
Documentary and Discussion: The Power of Our Convictions
A faculty forum with Freedom Rider Rip Patton will follow the 60-minute preview of Freedom Riders, a documentary premiering on PBS in May. The film chronicles the 1961 Freedom Rides, in which more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives to travel together on buses and trains through the Deep South in protest of racial segregation. Students and staff are welcome to attend. Registration is required. Lunch provided.
Faculty forum: The Power of Our Convictions
"The Power of Our Convictions: Freedom Riders Film and Facing History," a forum on the PBS film, "Freedom Riders." A discussion of the film and its implications for our lives as educators today, exploring concepts such as "universe of obligation" and experience flexible teaching strategies such as Big Paper and Town Hall Meeting.
Severe storm spotter training
Storm spotter training, presented by the National Weather Service, Des Moines, will cover a recap of the 2010 Iowa storm season, elements of storm spotting, storm safety and thunderstorm basics including lightning, cloud types and tornadoes. Training is especially encouraged for departments that have people working outdoors, but is open to all ISU faculty, staff and students. No admission, but register by phone or e-mail.

In Search of Learning and Healing
Working as a scientific and medical illustrator for nearly 40 years, Dean Biechler has created a long, intimate relationship with nature and a love for the land. Whatever his subject matter may be, it is always about being immersed into a situation, seeing, learning and understanding. Dean, lecturer in Art & Design, will be joined by Donald Sakaguchi, professor of Genetics, Development& Cell Biology.
Making Poverty History: Lessons from Farming Families in Mali
Scott Lacy moved to Mali in 1994 as a Peace Corps volunteer, returned in 2002 as a Fulbright scholar, and continues to work extensively in the West African country. His nonprofit, African Sky, has service programs in education, community health, food security and community arts in Mali, with a focus on sustainability living. Part of Poverty Awareness Week and the Live Green! Sustainability Series.
