Alex Buchanan is a food scientist who has developed such products as infant foods and high protein biscuits for use in developing countries and disaster relief. Buchanan is the recipient of the Rotary Foundation Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award.

He is a former executive director of the Crawford Fund, a division of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering that promotes technological expertise and agricultural research to increase sustainable global food production. His lecture will describe the experiments and technology leading to the technological and commercial development of our High protein "Australian milk biscuit" which was produced in large quantities for 25 years, and the technology and trials leading to "Kaset Infant Food" in Thailand, including why it was needed and why it was so successful in the villages of rural Thailand. The politics and methodology leading to an extensive and successful exercise in technical co-operation between the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) countries which was mainly projects in food science and nutrition -- which accumulated a lot of support from the Australian government as well as the ASEAN countries.
