Dr. Adah Leshem-Ackerman, pre-college education director, NSF Engineering Research Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC) and ISU Plant Genomics Outreach Program, will present, "Creating Teacher Scientists."

A number of federal agencies provide funds to support intensive professional development opportunities for science teachers to experience authentic scientific research. Over the past seven years, Iowa State has been offering these types of programs, including "Research Experiences for Teachers" (RET) and "Academies Creating Teacher Scientists" (ACTS). Assessments of the programs have focused on how these programs influence (a) teaching philosophy, (b) teaching methods and (c) content knowledge. As a result of participating in these programs, teachers gain increased content knowledge, increased laboratory skills and a clearer understanding of the nature of scientific research. This seminar will provide a brief overview of the program and other STEM initiatives associated with CBiRC and ISU plant genomics research.
