George Work, cello
|Date/Time:||Sunday, 30 Jan 2011 from 7:30 pm to 8:50 pm|
|Location:||Martha-Ellen Tye Recital, Music Building|
Cellist George Work will present a faculty recital at the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall on the ISU campus at 7:30 PM on the evening of January 30. The program will subsequently be repeated in Des Moines at Sheslow Auditorium on the Drake University campus at 8:00 PM on February 2nd.
The program will consist of pieces by Couperin, Corigliano, Chopin, and Kodaly. The first selection, Couperin's Pieces en Concert, will be presented in the version for solo cello with string quartet. Work will be joined for the performance by members of the Ames Quartet and the Des Moines Symphony. The second piece on the concert, Phantasmagoria by John Corigliano, is a gloss on the highly successful opera The Ghosts of Versailles, by the same composer. It features melodies from the opera set against a variety of highly pictorial and imaginative soundscapes. This will be followed by one of Chopin's few pieces to feature an instrument in addition to the piano, the melancholy and tuneful Sonata in G minor, Op 65. Performing with Work in the Corigliano and Chopin will be ISU piano faculty member Jodi Goble. The program will conclude with the renowned 20th century virtuoso masterpiece, Kodaly's Sonata, Op 8 for solo cello.
