An academic summit for teachers, administrators and students. The focus of the summit's activities will be the business of teaching and researching ethnic studies in institutions of higher education in the State of Iowa and the Midwest.

Slated to give the morning keynote address is Dr. Mark Grey, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Northern Iowa and Director of the Iowa Center for Immigrant Leadership and Integration. The luncheon keynote speaker will be Dr. Rose Brewer, Professor of African American Studies at the University of Minnesota and author of Black Radical Theory and Practice: Gender, Race, and Class. Other presenters will be coming from Grinnell College, Mount Mercy University, Cornell College, the University of Northen Iowa and Iowa State University.

The three panel sessions will address the following issues:
- the significance and relevance of ethnic studies in higher education today
- key topics in ethnic studies
- managing the ethnic studies unit
- curriculum planning (majors, minors and certificates)
- best practices for teaching the ethnic studies course
- "diversity"
- ethnic studies as social justice education
- community service and outreach
