Ute Poerschke, a national expert in Building Information Modeling and environmentally conscious design, will discuss different understandings of BIM in education and professional practice as part of the fall-semester Architecture Advisory Council Lecture Series at Iowa State University. The event is free and open to the public.

Poerschke is an associate professor of architecture at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, and a principal with Friedrich Poerschke Zwink Architekten, Munich. She holds a doctorate in architectural theory from the Technical University of Cottbus, Brandenburg, Germany.

In her presentation, Poerschke will compare BIM teaching models used in the Penn State departments of architecture, landscape architecture and architectural engineering, and reflect on the relevance for the different disciplines and professions.

While at Iowa State, Poerschke also will participate in a studio review with graduate students in the Architecture 601 Sustainable Building Design course taught by architecture faculty Clare Cardinal-Pett and Ulrike Passe. The review will be from 1:15 to 5 p.m. Nov. 14 in the fourth-floor center critique space, College of Design.

Poerschke's teaching and research focus on architectural design, technical systems integration, environmentally conscious design and the theory of integration in architecture. Prior to her appointment at Penn State, she taught at the Technical Universities of Berlin and Munich from 1999 to 2005.

In the past year, Poerschke and colleagues received three BIM teaching awards from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, American Institute of Architects and Autodesk for their collaborative cross-integration of architecture, architectural engineering and landscape architecture into their three curricula. Poerschke lectures and publishes widely on BIM and environmentally conscious design in education and practice.

Poerschke's visit is sponsored by the Architecture Advisory Council, the professional advisory board for the ISU Department of Architecture.
