Labh and Tahira Hira have spent most of their professional careers advancing the interests of Iowa State University. Since their arrival on campus in the early 1980s, they have brought distinction to the university, first through their pursuits as faculty members and later through their leadership as university administrators.
As the Raisbeck Endowed Dean in the College of Business, Labh Hira led a period of tremendous growth and transition for the college, including the completion of the $25 million Gerdin Business Building and the creation of a doctorate program in business and technology. He also worked to improve support for the college's faculty, students, and programs. Prior to his appointment as dean in 2001, he served as department chair for accounting and finance and later as associate dean and senior associate dean of the college.
A professor of personal finance and consumer economics in human development and family studies, Tahira Hira is internationally recognized for her research in consumer bankruptcy, consumer credit, the social and psychological aspects of borrowing behavior among Americans, the borrowing behavior of college students, and gambling. She served a term on the U.S. President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy. She also served as executive assistant to President Gregory Geoffroy and retires as President Steven Leath's senior policy adviser. She was previously associate vice provost for ISU Extension.
