A Study of Galactic Ring-Shaped HII Regions (Sung-ju Kang, Iowa State University) -and- CO Mapping Survey of the Serpens Molecular Cloud in 12CO J=2-1 and 13CO J=2-1 Emission (Alisha Chromey, Iowa State University)

Sung-ju Kang will report the results of a study of star-formation activity associated with the outer Galaxy ring-shaped HII regions KR7, KR81, KR120 and KR140 using archival Spitzer and WISE data along with JHK observations. This study used CO data cubes from the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory to define extent of the molecular cloud associated each HII region. The infrared data sets, allow identification and classification of YSO populations within each molecular cloud using measures such as the class I/II ratio and YSO spatial density. Combining these observations of the YSO population distribution with time scales associated with YSO evolution and HII region expansion, he investigated the possible significance of triggered star formation in the molecular cloud surrounding each region.

And Alisha Chromey will follow with a discussion of mapping 12CO and 13CO J=2-1 emission over the Serpens molecular cloud using the Arizona Radio Observatory Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope. Those maps resolve kinematic properties for the entire Serpens cloud. She will also compare velocity moment maps with known positions of young stellar objects and 1.1 mm continuum emission, finding that 12CO is self absorbed and 13CO is optically thick in the Serpens core.
