These auditions, in 41 districts around the country, are the first of three tiers of competition leading to a concert of 10 finalists with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York City. The public is invited to come for an aria or two or to stay for the entire afternoon.

The auditions are designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in developing their careers. Each auditioning singer performs two of five prepared arias representing different styles and languages. Iowa district winners advance to the Upper Midwest regional competition in Minneapolis and from there to New York City.

To audition, singers must be between 20 and 30 years old. They are judged on vocal quality, timbre, size of voice, technique, musicianship and interpretation of arias representing different styles and languages.
