Living with a Giant; The Hobby-Eberly Telescope (Rich Schuler, Iowa State University)

Designed specifically for spectroscopy, the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) is currently among the largest optical telescopes on Earth. The unique design allowed the partner universities to build a very large modern telescope at a fraction of the cost of similarly sized instruments. As the former optical-mechanical technician for the HET, I will present the design and operation of the telescope, as well as my experiences living on the mountain.
