The private bonsai collections of Iowa Bonsai Association members will be on display at Reiman Gardens for the Annual Fall Bonsai Show. There will be presentations and informal demonstrations each day.

Reiman Gardens will host the Iowa Bonsai Association (IBA) Fall Show October 10 and 11. Iowans look forward to the annual Iowa Bonsai Association show at Reiman Gardens. When Americans first encountered bonsai it was thought of as a Japanese phenomenon, but in the last few decades it has become very much an American pursuit. There are now, in Iowa, bonsai that have received honors at national exhibitions.

Bonsai has within it many different styles as well as many different species that lend themselves to treatment as bonsai. This year we will highlight two styles that are quite distinctive: Literati, and Penjing. Literati tend to look to most observers as the tall lonely expressive pine tree in the distance; to bonsaiists it is the style that breaks all the rules. It derives from Penjing, the Chinese form of bonsai which was ancestral to Japanese bonsai. Penjing is far more landscape oriented that Japanese bonsai with its emphasis on a single tree.

There will be two educational programs on each day--one on Literati at 10:30 a.m. and one on Penjing at 1:30 p.m.

No preregistration required. Admission is free for members and Iowa State University students. Price of admission for the general public.
