Abstract:
Participation of women and people of color in STEM disciplines has remained relatively minimal. What are some factors that contribute to this situation? In the presentation -- part lecture, part activity -- Delia Saenz will give an overview of factors that have been identified in the literature. Specifically, she will address how social psychological elements related to structure, content, and process play an important role in inhibiting or facilitating inclusion within educational settings. The work suggests that interventions must be broad-based and include cultural institutional changes within the academy.
This event is possible by a Women's and Diversity Grant from the office of the senior vice president and provost, ISU ADVANCE, College of Engineering, Iowa EPSCoR and CBiRC.
