Join us May 11-12 as we uncover what many already know about human learning, examine insights about the brain based on current research and the implications, engage in strategies that promote interaction and deep thinking; and apply your new understandings in situations where you facilitate learning. The strategies you experience and the concepts you explore will be directly applicable to classes, orientation sessions, extension meetings, or any other learning situations for which you are responsible, making your leadership even more effective for improving learning.
All resources and materials are provided. Lunch also is provided both days. The workshop will be led by ISU faculty member and Project LEA/RN associate director Jan Wiersema.
PARTICIPANTS MUST PLAN TO ATTEND BOTH DAYS - MAY 11 & 12.

An introduction to learning-centered classes and meetings
Higher education professionals and extension specialists are highly qualified in specific curricular areas, but few have had formal training related to theories of learning and teaching. Even fewer have studied current brain research or explored the potential applications of that research. Through this workshop, you have the opportunity to discuss learning and teaching theories and brain research. You will receive help in applying your new understandings in situations where you lead learning. Your meetings, classes, orientation sessions or any other learning situations for which you are responsible will become lab settings where you can purposefully plan to make your leadership even more effective for improving learning. In addition, the workshop offers you:
- Information about specific learning and teaching theories
- Information related to current brain research
- Practical ideas
- Strategies to ensure intentional mental processing by students and clients
- Strategies to promote higher levels of thinking and reasoning by students and clients
- Strategies to promote higher learner achievement and increased retention
- Opportunities to interact with your colleagues about learning and teaching
- Opportunities to develop plans for helping clients and students learn
- Opportunities to engage in intentional mental processing that will encourage and support ongoing learning for you and your learners
Intended learning outcomes:
- Confront beliefs about learning
- Discuss selected learning theories and the implications for helping others learn
- Experience learning-centered activities
- Purposefully plan to use learning-centered activities with learners
- Deliberately reflect on learning opportunities to enhance the learning.
- Experience community building in a safe environment
Expectations:
- Actively participate in every session
