Beyond the Barn Door: New Perspectives on Studying Cosmic-ray Accelerators (Dr. Amanda Weinstein, Iowa State University)

Gamma-ray observatories such as the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (sensitive to energies between 30 MeV and 1 TeV) and the ground-based observatories VERITAS, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and HAWC (sensitive to energies above 85 GeV) have revolutionized the study of powerful natural particle accelerators found throughout the cosmos. These accelerators include the elusive sources of cosmic rays. This talk will consider a number of recent developments in the search for cosmic ray accelerators within our Galaxy. Particular attention will be paid what we can learn from the study of gamma-ray emission from cosmic rays that have only recently been injected into the interstellar medium, as well as to new ways of addressing the technical challenges posed
