Within the basis light-front quantization approach, we obtain the mass spectrum and light-front wavefunctions of heavy quarkonium, using the one-gluon exchange interaction plus a confining potential inspired by light-front holography. We study the exclusive charmonium and bottomonium production in diffractive ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions within the dipole picture. The resulting cross sections are in reasonable agreement with existing experimental data at LHC for pp, pPb and PbPb collisions at various energies. We also study charmonium production at future electron ion collision experiments where we observe that the coherent production cross-section ratio of excited states to the ground state is not sensitive to the model parameters. This model-independence suggests that the light-front wavefunction of heavy quarkonium could be constrained by future electron-ion collision experiments. Thus the gluon density distribution function in the saturation regime can be effectively extracted through the coherent diffractive production of heavy quarkonium.
