We close out the year with a look at the principles of inclusive excellence and universal design via an article from Harvard University's teaching center. The authors discuss the implementation of IE and UD principles in a graduate-level class and the impacts implementing these principles had on the students as well as the faculty.

As we will see, these principles have a great deal of promise for creating open and equitable learning environments if the accompanying challenges (e.g., time, resources, content) are met. Adam J. Blanford will be the discussant for this conversation.

The article for this month's discussion is:
Rose, David H., Harbour, Wendy S., Johnson, Catherine Sam, Daley, Samantha G., and Linda Arbarbanell. 2006. Universal Design for Learning in Postsecondary Education: Reflections on Principles and their Application. Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability. 19(2): 135-151.

Some questions to consider as you read: What strategies used by the teaching center staff would you use/have used in your courses? The strategies for the implementation of universal design principles that are described in the article are compelling, but this course was managed by several staff members. How might a graduate student implement these strategies in a course where s/he might be the only teacher?

Check back on December 12 for a link to join this online event! In the meantime, sign up for a Moodle account to get access to this month's articles.
