Prof. Steve Kawaler, ISU

Pulsating white dwarfs were discovered nearly 50 years ago (!) and decades of ground-based high-speed photometric observation has fueled tremendous strides in understanding white dwarfs and the physics of their interiors. However, with the advent of space-based stellar photometry with spacecraft designed for exoplanet transit surveys, what we thought we know from white dwarf seismology has been undergoing substantial revision. In this seminar, I'll discuss some results of leukonanoseismic observations with Kepler and K2 and what they tell us about white dwarf rotation, the physics of pulsating stars, and above all, how to be humble.
