The artist will complete up to two portraits a day, for a total of thirteen by the end of her 9-day residency at Iowa State University. Portrait sitters were identified by various ISU colleges and University Museums and will join the nineteen Faces of Iowa State portraits painted by Frantzen during the run of the 2016 Iowa State Fair. The entire group of portraits will make up the Faces of Iowa State touring exhibition which will launch at the Brunnier Art Museum in late August 2017 and continue to sites throughout the state of Iowa.
About the Portrait Subject
George Burnet (B.S. '48, M.S. '49, Ph.D. '51 in chemical engineering), Anson Marston Distinguished Professor Emeritus and retired head of Department of Chemical Engineering, ISU. Burnet's professional career began in 1951 at Commercial Solvents Corp. in Terre Haute, Ind., where he worked for five years. He then returned to Ames to join the chemical engineering faculty in 1956. For the next 39 years, Burnet served on the faculty at Iowa State and advocated for research and education in chemical engineering. He also served as a Senior Scientist at Ames Laboratory. Burnet's chief research interests were in fertilizer technology, engineering education methods and development, coal waste utilization, process chemistry, and liquid metal technology. Burnet has long been a supporter of Iowa State University. Most recently, he played a key role in helping to organize the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) Centennial Celebration. He also co-authored the centennial's signature publication, "The First 100 Years of Chemical Engineering at Iowa State University," capturing moments that define Iowa State chemical engineering.
