Luckey's multimedia presentation provides background information on the Homestead Act, post-Slavery Reconstruction programs and the Indian Wars, illustrating how racially discriminatory federal land policies of the nineteenth century directly established the patterns of land ownership present today.

Day of Insects
The day will be filled with presentations from professionals, academics, advocates and enthusiasts. Emphasis will primarily be on different ways of studying, learning about and discovering insects. There will be a variety of topics including Citizen Science opportunities, Iowa insects, specific taxa, interactions between insects and their host plants, as well as land snails. Register by March 1.

Wasting Away: Conservation in the 21st Century
Please join in the discussion as our panel celebrates the accomplishments of Jay N. "Ding" Darling and examines his message of conservation for the 21st century. The panelists are Jim Pease, retired professor in Natural Resource Ecology and Management, Steve Lekwa, director for the Story County Conservation Board, Erv Klaas, former leader of Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and Brian Duffy, editorial cartoonist.

Lecture: Laughing Without an Accent
"Laughing Without an Accent," Firoozeh Dumas. Dumas is a humorist and author. She was born in Abadan, Iran, and moved to Southern California with her family in the 1970s. Dumas grew up listening to her father, a former Fulbright Scholar, recount the many colorful stories of his life in both Iran and America and decided to write her stories as a gift for her children.

Lecture: The Mathematics of Financial Derivatives and the Wall Street Crisis
Financial derivatives are contracts whose values are derived from the values of assets such as stocks. The derivative market grew into a massive bubble from about $100 trillion to $516 trillion between 2002 and 2007. "The Mathematics of Financial Derivatives and the Wall Street Crisis," Roselyn Williams. The mathematical theory of simple financial derivatives and look at the relationship between the derivative market and the stock market.
Lecture: The Crisis in American Foreign Policy
Seymour Hersh is an investigative journalist, author, and regular contributor to the New Yorker on topics of U.S. military operations and national security. In 2004, he broke the story of the U.S. miltary's mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison.
