Paint Your Own Pottery: Give Back Week
Bring in a non-perishable food in exchange for $5 off pottery painting. Donations will be delivered to The SHOP (Students Helping our Peers), a student-run, on-campus food pantry. Their mission is to engage with anti-hunger, advocate, and serve the student population by increasing hunger awareness and food security. Information about SHOP and how to get involved will be available. Drop in anytime Monday-Friday 2-9pm or Saturday 10am-4pm.

In light of our current global crisis with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and its role in Saudi Arabia's difficult decision to dramatically restrict hajj, umrah, and tourism travel in 2020 and 2021, the relevance of Mecca's pandemic past raises urgent new questions for understanding the present and future of pilgrimage management and even wider questions of mass mobility, tourism, travel restrictions, and border management.

How do we approach our transition from learner to teacher? How do we help our students transfer their learning into laboratories, graduate schools, and careers? How can we prepare for dynamic research teamwork in academe and industry?
Escape from Spreadsheet Hell
This workshop introduces ways to structure data that is computer and human friendly, practices for documenting your work, and functions for simple data processing and quality control. This is a beginner level workshop that covers how to format data and simple data processing in a spreadsheet program such as Excel. No prior experience is needed.
Seminar: "Mobility For All: Representative Intergenerational Mobility Estimates"
Elisa Jacome (Stanford University) We present the first estimates of long-run trends in intergenerational relative mobility for samples that are representative of the full U.S.-born population. Harmonizing all surveys that ask about father's occupation and own family income, we develop a mobility measure that allows for the inclusion of non-whites and women for the 1910s-1970s birth cohorts.

This event has been moved to Nov. 9. ISU Innovator-in-Residence David Slump will announce this year's Student Innovation Fund Challenge. David will discuss the process of identifying and breaking down global and societal problems into manageable student projects.
Virtual panel: Language and Communication Justice series
"Linguistic justice in and beyond the classroom: Language, gender, and sexuality scholars on language advocacy," Allyson Jule, Lal Zimman and Joyhanna Yoo Garza. The panel will discuss language justice and gender and sexuality, highlighting their research and advocacy and encouraging ISU and Ames community members to engage in this work as well. Part of the Writing and Media Center's 2021-2022 Speaker Series on Language an Communication Justice.
Folded Forms & Twisted Figures: An evening of dance & art
Performances of original compositions under the direction of Kinesiology faculty member Cynthia Adams. Dance students and Orchesis I dancers will present choreography inspired by their close investigations at the sculptures and drawings from the exhibition "Charles Ginnever: Folded Forms."
Minorities Report: Indigenous Peoples in Socialist and Post-Socialist China
What are "indigenous peoples" in China, and what are their worlds like? How did the Ming and Qing states manage non-Han indigenous peoples through the native hereditary chieftain system (known as the tusi system)? How did the socialist state create a nation of 56 nationalities, and what were its policies towards so-called "minority nationalities?" Erik Mueggler, University of Michigan, will deliver the Phi Beta Kappa Lecture.
