"Fighting Hunger: A DNA Engineer's Path to Science and Success," Charles Stewart Jr., research associate at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Stewart works to understand how plant enzymes make an array of chemicals important to medicine and agriculture. Using the 3D protein structure, he studies the evolution of protein function and how proteins can be engineered to improve the quality and quantity of the world's food supply.

From Idea to Novel: A Writer and Activist at Work
Author and environmentalist Rick Bass is the author of more than 20 books, including the autobiographical Why I Came West and the short story collection The Lives of Rocks. His latest novel, Nashville Chrome, draws on the rise and fall of the Brown trio, the true-life country music trailblazers who pioneered the 1950s sound from which the novel takes its title.

Making Poverty History: Lessons from Farming Families in Mali
Scott Lacy moved to Mali in 1994 as a Peace Corps volunteer, returned in 2002 as a Fulbright scholar, and continues to work extensively in the West African country. His nonprofit, African Sky, has service programs in education, community health, food security and community arts in Mali, with a focus on sustainability living. Silence of the Songbirds
Bridget Stutchbury studies the ecology and behavior of songbirds in North America and the New World tropics. Her 2007 book Silence of the Songbirds looks at the recent decline in migratory songbirds and the factors most threatening their extinction, from pesticides to habitat destruction and city lights to climate change.
