Dr. Kenneth "Mark" Bryden is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Iowa State University. Dr. Bryden has an active research and teaching program in the areas of sustainable engineering, appropriate technology, decision science, and simulation based engineering science. He has written more than 100 peer reviewed articles in the areas of modeling, complex systems and decision science. He is the Program Director for the Simulation, Modeling and Decision Science Program in the US Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory and heads the Virtual Engineering Research Laboratory within the Virtual Reality Applications Center at Iowa State University. The Virtual Engineering Research Laboratory focuses on integration of information technologies and cognition into the engineering process to support decision making for and the realization of complex systems.

Dr. Bryden is President of Engineers for Technical and Humanitarian Opportunities for Service (ETHOS). ETHOS is an international NGO focused on the issues of household energy in the developing world. In addition, Dr. Bryden is the faculty advisor for the Iowa State University Chapter of Engineers Without Borders and currently has student based appropriate technology projects focused on meeting the needs of the poor in Vietnam, India, Honduras, and Mali.

Prior to his arrival at Iowa State University in 1998, Dr. Bryden worked 14 years in a wide range of engineering positions at Westinghouse Electric Corporation. This included more than 10 years as an engineering management. This included 8 years in power plant operations and testing and 6 years in engineering support. Dr. Bryden is the recipient of numerous awards
including a 2006 R&D 100 award for the development of the software package VE-Suite.
