"Living on the Edge: High-Consequence Zoonotic Pathogens & One Health Concepts," Dr. Thomas Ksiazek, University of Texas, Galveston.

Thomas G. Ksiazek, DVM, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Pathology and Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He is also director of the High Containment Operations Core at the Galveston National Laboratory. Dr. Ksiazek's research interests include the epidemiology, ecology and laboratory diagnosis of hemorrhagic fevers and arthropod-borne viral diseases. He recently spent six weeks in Sierra Leone where he led a team responding to the Ebola crisis.

Dr. Ksiazek received a DVM from Kansas State University in 1970 and a PhD from the University of California in 1984. He was chief of the CDC's Special Pathogens Branch from 1991-2005, where he coordinated outbreak and control responses to pathogens such as Ebola, Marburg and SARS. Dr. Ksiazek has authored more than 350 research papers and has received numerous career achievement awards.
