The word perfume comes from the Latin phrase, "per fumum" meaning through smoke. Perfumes had many uses and meanings: Sacred, used in the worship of the gods or the burial of the dead; Status, used by athletes, aristocrats, politicians, and royalty; Medicinal, used to heal. In ancient Egypt, Greece, and across the Roman Empire, perfume was part of ritual, beauty, and commerce. The history of perfume is also the history of the human race. Travel into our scented past and discover that history with this presentation from Amanda Feeley, natural perfumer and owner of Esscentual Alchemy. Amanda will also display a Roman Unguentarium (perfume vial), and will re-create a typical perfume of the Roman period, to offer an opportunity to smell how perfumes differ from Roman times to the 21st century.
Preregistration with prepayment required by Thursday, July 30th. Cost is $20 for members and $25 for the general public. Iowa State University students pay 15% off the member price.
