The problem with a maturing home landscape is that all of those gorgeous trees you have been nurturing to their magnificent adult size are now diminishing those full-sun perennial beds. Don't despair; shade gardening is more than hostas and astilbes. The plant palette is much more expansive than many people realize. In addition, shade opens up entirely different garden uses and sensations that balance sun inspired areas. Come learn why shade is 'hot'!

Topic: How to Build/Improve a Successful Shade Garden

So many gardening presentations show you the "after" possibly with some "before" but rarely include images of the actual process. Ed Lyon has built 3 major shade gardens in 18 years and photographed the process and progress of all three. The first was in 1997 as display gardens in a nursery; in 2007 he moved and started over with a Victorian home landscape; and he is now developing his third after a move to Iowa in 2015. Both moves also included transporting plants from the former landscape. In this presentation he explains how to overcome the challenges of shade gardening whether you are building from scratch or improving an existing space. This talk is truly a how to.

Preregistration with prepayment is required by Monday, February 29. Cost for one class is $16 for members and $20 for the general public. Cost for the series is$60 for members and $75 for the general public. Iowa State University students pay 15% off the member rate.
