Diane Birt, Distinguished Professor of food science and human nutrition, will present "Diet and Cancer: A Body of Research Leading to National Academy Membership." The lecture portion of the program is open to the public following the member social.

Considerable evidence supports a role of diet in cancer prevention and this area has been the primary focus of research in the Birt laboratory. This talk will summarize key findings in areas of 1) The impact of macronutrient components of diet on pancreatic cancer; 2) Identification and mechanism of action of plant based dietary inhibitors of cancer; 3) Understanding the mechanism of dietary energy restriction prevention of cancer; and 4) Identification and mechanism of action of anti-inflammatory constituents of selected botanical supplements. These findings have helped inform recommendations for diet and health and provided a foundation for service to the National Academies spanning 20 years prior to Birt's election to the National Academy of Medicine in 2015.
