Barjche 2016: Modern dance through the ages. ISU's annual contemporary dance concert featuring faculty, students and guest artists dance works.

Barjche, (pronounced Bar-Shay), Iowa State University's annual modern dance concert, was first created in 1946 by three Iowa State students: Barbara, Jean and Charlotte. The founding members of ISU's modern dance club, Orchesis, wanted to include a modern dance concert to give students an opportunity to perform, choreograph, and inspire. Since that time, Barjche has been produced annually by the Orchesis I Dance Company.

Modern dance formed in the early 20th century as a rebellion against classical ballet, using more off-center movements and less musicality.

Pieces in this year's concert will represent a time period from 1940 to the present, such as "He Told me Not to Cry", a dance choreographed by Orchesis I member and ISU alumna Hannah Zimmer about World War II.

This year, 37 students will dance in 13 dances and several shorter historical moment pieces. Many of the pieces were choreographed by students. Also featured will be choreography from alumni of Orchesis I; Cynthia Adams, a lecturer in kinesiology and the artistic director of Barjche; and a guest piece.

Guest artists Melecio Estrella and Andrew Ward from Joe Goode Performance Group spent a week in December guest-teaching at Iowa State
