Discussions of inequality are critical to higher education in that all programs, to varying degrees, promote discourse of social inequalities in ability, sex, gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation and religion. This aspect of education can be particularly challenging when discussing privilege and oppression as it can feel threatening for all individuals (Boyd, 2008) since we all have parts of our identities that can be affected ...

... by both. Workshop participants will: a) explore their identities (both privileged and oppressed) using a personal identity wheel activity, b) engage in thoughtful discussion around the topics of self-awareness, implicit bias, and the impact of personal identities on teaching, and c) become familiar with diversity and inclusion resources at Iowa State University. Presented by C. Liz Mendez-Shannon, Ph.D., Project Director, Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion

About Dr. Consuelo "Liz" Mendez-Shannon, MSW
Dr. Liz Mendez-Shannon is the Diversity and Inclusion Project Director in Hispanic/Latinx Affairs. Prior to joining Iowa State University, Dr. Liz served as an Associate Professor at Metropolitan State in their Social Work Department. Having worked in Harlem, New York as a Program Director, she brings a wealth of social work experience and leadership in two key areas: Latinx issues and integrated health care. She is an awardee of grants including one from the Council of Social Work Education called HEALS (Healthcare and Leadership Scholars) which offers scholarships for social work students specializing in health care. This grant aimed to increase diversity and combat social injustices in health care systems. Dr. Liz is also active in community organizing and grass-root movements related to issues of immigrant advocacy and "unauthorized" children at the border. She recently presented her research on resilience among the undocumented Latinx immigrant community at Dalhousie University's Pathway to Resilience III Conference "Beyond Nature vs. Nurture" in Halifax, Canada summer 2015. She is an innovative leader in the area of leadership and multiculturalism. She serves as a consultant with Foundations and various collaborations including judicial systems and police districts.

Dr. Liz earned her bachelor's degree in Psychology (1990) from Hunter College, a masters in social work (1996) from Hunter College School of Social Work and a doctorate in social work (2010) from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Liz and her family enjoy meditation and a mindfulness practice. Her family is also passionate about outdoor activities as well as music, singing and dancing.
