Meet artists Whitney Courtney Nastanovich and Michelle Holley, and see their new work on display at the Memorial Union.

"Ghost Twinkles" by Whitney Courtney Nastanovich is on display in the Pioneer Room, and "So the Story Goes" by Michelle Holley is on display in the Gallery.

Nastanovich uses a combination of prints, painting media, found papers and stitches, reflecting both the process and destruction of hand-recorded data. She constructs her own "research tools" using repeated shapes and patterns. As pieces are updated, they are erased by sandpaper, stitched with thread, and covered with notes and visual images. In the age of digital media that can be erased with one swipe, Nastanivich holds on to charts, graphs and maps - processes of past data collection that have been sacrificed for modern clarity.

Drawing from the crisp line-work of screen printing, dynamic color combinations, and wood patterns from birch cut-outs, Holly paints a dreamland of figurative surrealism. Sometimes through recognizable creatures, sometimes not, influences can be tied to childhood cartoons, daydreams, and nightmares, coming together to form a world that is on the essence of existence, but just out of reach.
