Abstract: Strong spin-orbit coupling in quantum materials provides a novel route to obtain the spin liquid phase, which is a highly entangled quantum ground state of interacting electron systems and hosts exotic quasiparticles. Recently there have been tremendous efforts to realize the Kitaev spin liquid, which is an exactly solvable example of the spin liquid state, in real materials. After an introduction to topological nature of spin liquid phases, I will discuss the recent experimental and theoretical works on these systems.

Bio: Yong-Baek Kim is a professor of physics and the Director of the Center for Quantum Materials at the University of Toronto. He received his Ph.D. in 1995 at MIT and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Bell Laboratories in 1995-1997. He was a faculty member at the Penn State University and the Ohio State University before he moved to the University of Toronto in 2001. He is the recipient of the 2017 Brockhouse medal (from the Canadian Association of Physicist) and a fellow of the American Physical Society.
