"How Iowa Met Baseball: The Myths, The History, The Players" with baseball historian John Liepa.

This Smithsonian Hometown Teams Exhibit Speaker Series is a special presentation about the myths regarding the "invention" of baseball, the origins and evolution of the early game in the United States; how the Civil War played a role in accelerating the spread of the game; the very first mention of the game's coming to Iowa in 1858, and how it caught on. Liepa's extensive baseball memorabilia, including baseball cards, will also be on display prior to and during his 7pm presentation. This is a free community event.

"Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America" is part of Museum on Main Street, a unique collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, state humanities councils across the nation, and local host institutions. Locally, the exhibit is sponsored by the Ames Convention and Visitor's Bureau community grant, Ames Tribune, City of Ames, Hunziker Realty, Hunziker Property Management. HCS Builders, Iowa State University Athletics Department, Mediacom, Wells Fargo Bank, and the Ames Chamber of Commerce.

Hosting Locations: Octagon Center for the Arts, ISU Design on Main, Ames Historical Society, Ames Public Library, Little Woods Herbs & Teas.
