Groundwater recharge, baseflow and evapotranspiration are major hydrological processes in the basin-scale water cycle but they are difficult to measure directly. In shallow aquifer systems, these hydrologic processes commingle with one another at the water table surface and high-resolution water table monitoring can provide insights at local and regional scales. In this presentation, use of water table monitoring to assess local and watershed-scale recharge, ET and groundwater nutrient loading patterns is examined within a new "groundwater response unit" framework using examples from a variety of Iowa-based studies.
