NASHUA, Iowa - Farmers who attend the annual spring field day at Iowa State University's Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm will get an inside look at popular topics for 2019, including industrial hemp, small grains production and the growing season forecast.

Hartzler speaking to field day participants seated on hayrack.Planned for June 26, the program will begin at 1 p.m. with a talk by Dennis Todey, director of the United States Department of Agriculture's Midwest Climate Hub, regarding his insights on this year's crop weather.

Angie Rieck-Hinz, field agronomist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, will follow with a discussion on the likelihood of hemp production in Iowa for 2020, including regulations, current production practices and economic information from other states.

An on-farm wagon tour will feature Stefan Gailans, research and field crops director with Practical Farmers of Iowa, and Ed Zaworski, plant pathologist for Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinic at Iowa State. Gailans will share information about oat production and seeding cover crops into V6 corn, and Zaworski will discuss plant disease issues in a wet spring and considerations for foliar fungicide applications later in the season.

CCA credits will be available (2 CM, 1 PM, 0.5 SW).

The field day is free and open to the public, and begins in the meeting room of the Borlaug Learning Center, located on the demonstration farm property.
