One lesson learned is that Team-Based Learning (TBL) instructors can be better prepared with strategies to help students persist through challenging application exercises when they know more about the mindset characteristics and preferred learning strategies of the students in their course. For example, it can be frustrating for students to discover that there is not a single correct answer to a case study application exercise.

By being better informed about the mindset of students in the course, a TBL instructor can include positive coaching messages to help students persist through open-ended cases and learn the value of practicing this type of analysis.

Dr. Lotfi Ben-Othmane will present the results of a study to understand the relationship between the students' mindsets and their cognitive levels, expectations, and preferred learning methods. The goal of the talk is to initiate a discussion on the role of student's mindset in effectively acquiring and using knowledge. Visit Lotfi Ben-Othmane's ISU webpage.

*About the TBL TLC*
This topic-based teaching and learning community meets throughout the academic year. We work as teams to optimize application exercises, readiness assurance tests, peer evaluation, and other aspects of course design, and also invite speakers to facilitate discussions of TBL theory, research and classroom application.

**Registration is not required.
