Dr. Michael Walsh, director of weed research at the University of Sydney - Australia. The Staniforth Lecture series is presented in honor of David Staniforth, a pioneer in the field of weed science who was particularly interested in weed biology-ecology. The lecture series is sponsored by the Staniforth Fund in the Department of Agronomy at Iowa State.

Dr. Walsh is an Associate Professor and the Director of Weed Research at the University of Sydney (Australia). He has led research and development activities focusing on farming machines that reduce weed population densities by destroying weed seeds before they return to the soil during crop harvest operations. Because populations of many weed species have evolved resistance to multiple herbicides, such approaches are of considerable interest worldwide as components of integrated approaches for weed management. Dr. Walsh currently leads the 'Innovation in Crop Weed Control' project aimed at the development of alternate weed control technologies for the northern grain region of Queensland and New South Wales. He completed his B.Sc. at the University of Western Australia, M.Sc. at La Trobe University, Melbourne, and Ph.D. at the University of Wyoming.
