This week, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Senior Director in Science Education, David Asai, is welcomed by Summer Institutes leader Mays Imad to engage in a dialogue on "Prioritizing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the Age of Covid-19." HHMI's core values lie in supporting diverse, equitable solutions to complex problems. Their defining statement that "diversity is essential for excellence," is backed by research showing "the more difficult the problem, the greater the benefit of diversity in finding the solution" (S.E.Page, 2007). COVID-19 not only disrupts students' educational pathways, but also their daily lives, impacting their emotional and mental well-being in a variety of complex ways. During this SI Happy Hour will discuss strategies that can be used to help students recognize and mitigate the impact of stress and anxiety and improve student learning. This is one happy hour you won't want to miss.
Grab a drink, get a snack, and drop in for a few minutes on Zoom to share challenges and successes around the rapid transition to remote teaching and learning. Come ready to chat with others who may be having common experiences at their home institutions. Based on research by the Summer Institutes, we know that supports are three times more important than barriers in implementing Scientific Teaching in typical classroom environments, so join us for support from the Summer Institutes (SI) community (Bathgate et al., 2019a, 2019b). The Scientific Teaching in Practice Webinar Series extends the learning and dialogue that occurs at the Summer Institutes (SI) on Scientific Teaching into a year-round community that supports and inspires evidence-based teaching. Each month, the SI community is invited to attend an interactive webinar related to the practice and/or dissemination of scientific teaching. The webinar will be facilitated by someone experienced in that area, integrating significant time for questions and open discussion. Webinars are open to SI alums as well as those generally interested in scientific teaching and evidence-based teaching strategies.
