In this interactive workshop, Amanda Fales-Williams, Tyrone D. Artz, M.D. Chair for Teaching Excellence in Veterinary Medicine, Professor and Chair (Veterinary Pathology) and University Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching winner, shares how she uses disciplinary writing in her classrooms. She's documented how her writing assignments for seniors allows them to consolidate their knowledge from different courses in the program and focus their reflection by asking them to write to an audience of first years. In her first year classes, assigning readings from these papers using a series of response questions has increased curiosity and reframed current and future learning. Participants in this workshop will leave with plans for how to build more connectivity between early and late disciplinary learning, foster a community, and increase support and engagement in their departments.
