Even with the best of intentions, summative assessments are frequently perceived to be onerous, disconnected from real life, and treacherous to understand. When students are successfully included in the assessment, they respond with greater effort and find well-aligned exams to be worthwhile and motivating.

How do we write assessments with student goals in mind (while still assigning scores and NOT spending the rest of our lives grading)? We'll discuss small and large changes that can help guide student pre-exam work to more personally useful tasks, allow students behind the curtain of the assessment system, and make challenging exams more accessible to all of our students.

Presented by Ben Wiggins, Professor, Manager of Instruction of Biology, Education, University of Washington.

Series Overview
The Scientific Teaching in Practice Webinar Series extends the learning and dialogue that occurs at the Summer Institutes (SI) on Scientific Teaching into a year-round community that supports and inspires evidence-based teaching. Each month, the SI community is invited to attend an interactive webinar related to the practice and/or dissemination of scientific teaching. The webinar will be facilitated by someone experienced in that area, integrating significant time for questions and open discussion. Webinars are open to SI alums as well as those generally interested in scientific teaching and evidence-based teaching strategies.

The series is brought to you by Yale Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Summer Institutes on Scientific Teaching.
