The Writing and Media Center invites you to a virtual panel featuring three published writers sharing insight into processes such as writing book proposals, negotiating contracts, and securing work as a freelance writer. Panelists will also be asked to share their advice for aspiring writers and to answer questions from the audience.

Katharine A. Burnett is an associate professor of English and the coordinator of the English and Gender Studies programs at Fisk University in Nashville, TN. Her research and teaching focus on nineteenth-century literature and literature of the U.S. South. Her book, Cavaliers and Economists: Global Capitalism and the Development of Southern Literature, 1820-1860 was published with LSU Press in 2019, and her work has appeared in the Cambridge History of the Literature of the U.S. South, the essay collection Southern Comforts, PMLA, College Literature, and the Southern Literary Journal (later south).

Dara T. Mathis is a Maryland-based freelance writer whose work focuses on popular culture, race, and motherhood. Her bylines have appeared at The New York Times, The Atlantic, Zora Magazine, Bitch Media, and other outlets. She is also the winner of the 2020 Blood Orange Review contest in nonfiction. When she doesn't have her nose in a book, she enjoys exploring the Mid-Atlantic with a scientist and their three small humans.

Ed Lyon is the director of Reiman Gardens, Iowa State University. He is also proprietor of Spellbound Garden Writing & Consultation through which he speaks on horticultural topics to public and professional audiences and writes for national gardening magazines. In 2015 his book Growing the Midwest Garden was published by Timber Press.
