Congresswoman Bella Abzug first introduced a proclamation for this day in 1971, and every president since has recognized August 26th as Women's Equality Day.
Although passage of the 19th Amendment is an important moment in history, women of color were still blocked from voting - some for another 45 years. It wasn't until 1924 that voting rights were recognized for Indigenous Peoples, 1929 for Latinx, 1943 for Chinese, and 1952 for Japanese and Pacific Islanders. While Black women were active in the women's suffrage movement of the early 19th century, they remained barred from voting for decades. It wasn't until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 that Black women were granted the right to vote.
Buttons will be available after today for 50 cents.
