Synopsis: Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is one of the leading causes of mobility-related impairment. affecting approximately 5.6 million individuals in the U.S. alone. PTOA develops following traumatic injury, such as intra-articular fracture (IAF), with primary mid- to long-term consequences including joint pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. There is strong evidence that the cause of PTOA after an IAF is elevated contact stress exposures from residual incongruities on the articular surface. Carbon fiber bracing is an attractive intervention after traumatic ankle joint injury that has been shown to effectively address functional deficits and reduce pain. It may also be able to prevent PTOA after IAF by reducing ankle contact stress exposure. We have developed a computational modeling framework to assess the effects of carbon fiber bracing on ankle joint function and contact mechanics. The framework enables thorough investigation of parameters that are difficult to measure directly, such as muscle force, joint reaction force, and articular contact stress, that may have important implications for mobility outcomes and/or development of pain or PTOA.
