Synopsis: As a safe, dynamic meditation originated from martial arts, Tai chi is a centuries-old practice that involves specific postures and gentle movements with mental focus, breathing, and relaxation. Practicing tai chi may help to improve balance, stability, and postural control in older people. The journey of Dr. Li along the path of learning, teaching, and researching the benefits of Tai Chi emerged from a series of seemly random events more than a decade ago. In this seminar, he will share what he has learned when exploring the potential mechanical, neurological, and systematical mechanisms through which Tai Chi could improve people's postural control. Research Professor from Georgia Southern University, Dr. Li studied physics in college, trained to be a biomechanist through graduate studies, applied biomechanics, motor control, neurophysiology, and dynamic systems theory in his research. He will discuss the multidisciplinary approach he employed in his research to break up the silo of discipline and the life-long learning attitude to embrace oneself for the challenges of new research questions.
