ISU Day at the Capitol
President Steven Leath and representatives from the university will be in the rotunda with displays to show what Iowa State has to offer students, communities, businesses and Iowans across the state. Cy will be available for photos. A legislative and alumni reception will follow in the Embassy Suites ballroom (5:30-7:30 p.m., RSVP by Jan. 30).
Knitting Class
Learn the basics of knitting: cast-on, knit, purl, bind-off, rib stitch, increase and decrease techniques, pattern reading, gauge swatching, and picking up dropped stitches. Bring a pair of #7 or #8 single-point needles. Yarn will be provided.
Photoshop Class
Explore the basic tools of Photoshop. This class will be a slowly paced, step-by-step, follow-along class for the raw beginner. Get a handle on the basic functionality of this complicated program including: layers, cropping, filters, brushes, text and shapes. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop with Photoshop CS3 or higher. Otherwise, you are welcome to sit in and take notes.

Lost-wax casting is an age-old sculptural jewelry process. Students will incorporate both hand carved and molded forms that will be cast in brass. Final pieces can be pendants, pins or miniatures.

Try different sculptural techniques in clay with a focus on the figure. Start with the additive process of modeling using an armature. Explore how subtracting clay can assist in creating greater detail. Discover how the human form can be beautifully translated into clay.

Ceramics Workshop: Fluid Form with Lisa Orr
Studio potter Lisa Orr will offer a three-day ceramics workshop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 26-28. Orr, the owner of Lisa Orr Pottery in Austin, Texas, will demonstrate her unique production process, and those with prior ceramics experience may participate in hands-on activities. Others are welcome to observe and ask questions.
