The 21st David W. Staniforth Lecture will be presented by Dr. David A. Mortensen, a professor of weed ecology and biology in the department of crop & soil sciences at The Pennsylvania State University.
Mortensen's research focuses on elucidating the ecological principles underlying sustainable cropping systems. He has studied the influence of landscape and management heterogeneity on cropping systems performance and weed population dynamics using spatially explicit empirical and modeling methods. Mortensen is trained as an applied plant ecologist and has spent most of his career studying aspects of weed ecology with a particular interest in determining how such studies would directly benefit farmers through enhancing production efficiency, while at the same time identifying practices that offer enhanced environmental protection.
Mortensen has chaired the USDA National Research Initiative on the Biology of Weedy and Invasive Species in Agroecosystems (2008-2009), the USDA-RAMP and CAR IPM competitive grants program (2003-2004) and the Weed Biology Committee in the Weed Science Society of America and the North Central Integrated Pest Management Regional Research Program. He served on a congressionally-appointed panel charged with Preventing the Introduction of Plant Pathogens into the United States: The Role and Application of the "Systems Approach" (2000-2002) and was a panel member of the National Academy of Sciences. He is author of the Precision Agriculture in the 21st Century: Geospatial and Information Technologies in Crop Management report.
Mortensen serves as the editor of Reviews in Weed Science and was past associate editor of Weed Science. Mortensen has received numerous professional awards including the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Weed Science Society of America and the Distinguished Young Weed Scientist from the North Central Weed Science Society. He was twice the recipient of the Outstanding Paper in the Journal of Weed Science. Mortensen has published numerous peer-reviewed scientific papers in highly recognized journals and is recognized as an international leader in weed ecology and agroecosystems.
