"New Biology for the 21st Century." Thomas M. Connelly, Jr., is the executive vice president and chief innovation officer for DuPont.

An Ohio native, Connelly holds undergraduate degrees in Chemical engineering and Economics from Princeton University and a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge. He joined DuPont in 1977 as research engineer at the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware. Among his many current responsibilities, Connelly provides oversight of Applied BioSciences, Nutrition & Health, as well as Integrated Operations for DuPont.

Connelly served as co-chair for the Committee on a New Biology for the 21st Century. This committee was formed by the National Research Council's Board on Life Sciences in response to the NIH, NSF and DoE request for recommendations on how to best capitalize on recent technological and scientific advances in biology.

Dr. Connelley will describe the process that the committee utilized in developing the recommendations and the subsequent responses of federal funding agencies.

This workshop is sponsored by the Plant Sciences Institute, the Center for Integrated Animal Genomics, and the Biotechnology Council.
