A year after the Pluto system flyby the New Horizons space probe has returned all the data collected by its onboard instruments during the encounter. The first publications offer explanations for the diverse features on the surfaces and subsurface of Pluto and its moons, the makeup and structure of Pluto's atmosphere, the origins of the Pluto system, as well as opening the first window into the characteristics of the Kuiper Belt objects that populate the outer Solar System. Knowledge of the Kuiper Belt will depend on New Horizons data from the Pluto system and the probe's subsequent encounters for several years to come.
